A Home Town With Old Chimneys
Santa Paula grew up around citrus and oil in the Santa Clara River Valley. Its historic downtown and the streets around it hold some of the oldest houses in Ventura County, and some of their brick chimneys date from the early 1900s.
Head down the valley to Ventura or up it to Fillmore and the chimneys get younger and more mixed: brick with clay tile flues, brick that was patched after an earthquake, and metal flues boxed into a framed chase.
So we do not treat a chimney as just a chimney. We date it first, then check the parts that era tends to lose first, and only then talk about repairs.

Date It Before We Judge It
Every visit starts by working out when the chimney went up and how it was built, because wear only makes sense against the era it came from.
Inspections to NFPA 211
Level 1 and Level 2 inspections follow NFPA 211, the national standard for chimneys, fireplaces and vents, with a camera scan when the flue calls for it.
Keep the Original Where It Holds
Old brick and old mortar get matched, not replaced by default. A liner inside a sound stack is often better than tearing the stack down.

Our home town is Santa Paula, with Fillmore up the valley and Ventura down it. Those are the old chimneys we know best, and they come first on our route.
The Four Chimneys We Sort By
Most calls fit one of these. Each has its own weak points, so each gets checked in its own order.
Hand-laid brick, oldest first
We look for a liner before anything else, then work down the mortar joints from the crown. Soft brick and open joints near the top are the usual first finds.
Brick with a clay tile flue
The tiles and the joints between them get the camera. A cracked tile or a gap at a joint is easy to miss with a flashlight and matters more than the soot.
Brick that was repaired before
Some stacks in the valley were patched after the 1994 Northridge earthquake. We check whether the old repair is still holding, and say plainly if it is upkeep or structural work.
Factory-built metal in a chase
These are only as good as their listed parts. We check the cap, the chase top, the firestop and the liner against what the system was built with.
