What the standard is

NFPA 211 is a written standard for chimneys, fireplaces and vents. It tells inspectors when a Level 2 makes sense. It is not a ticket we write.

What it is not

It does not pass or fail your house. If a buyer wants work done, money off or a return visit, those in the deal and their agents decide. Legal and contract advice is outside our work.

A cracked crown on a house from the last few decades and one on a much older stack may call for different work. The report says which you have.

Fixes a Level 2 can lead to

We name the era of the stack in the report, because the same crack means different things in different decades.

  • Damper
  • Smoke chamber
  • Chase cover
  • Cricket and flashing
  • Leak repair
  • Chimney cap
  • Gas insert
  • Firebox
  • Flue liner
  • Crown
  • Mortar and masonry

Prices we can state

Five of these have a set price range.

  • Cricket with full flashing replacement: $710 to $1,750
  • Cricket: $475 to $1,065
  • Leak repair: $590 to $3,550
  • Gas insert: $2,950 to $5,900
  • Cap: $175 to $710

Everything else

The remaining items wait for a quote after the inspection. Those are crown work and the liner. Then come a chase cover, the damper, and mortar with masonry. Last are the smoke chamber and the firebox. Where the original brick still holds, we aim to keep it.

A quote depends on what is behind the brick, and the photos help us read it.

About the standard

Is NFPA 211 a law?

It is a standard. Your local building code is separate, and the report names conditions short of either.

Does failing mean the fireplace is finished?

No. It means repair is needed before safe use.

Can I keep my old brick?

Where it still holds, we keep it. The report says where it does not.
